Description
SOLD This fabulous and warm, handmade crochet scart or hat, scarf and bag combo features rich, subtle cool tones accented with flashes of fiery orange.
Blues from royal to navy to denim, and back to cerulean and teal, rub shoulders with velvety black, rich purple and deep greens, all lightly and surprisingly sprinkled with vibrant oranges, like glints of colour in a fire opal. Small, sparkling sequins and soft, lurex-plied designer yarns add extra touches of glitz to the Blue Opal scart.
The crown and scarf ends themselves boast fancy entarsia (tapestry) crochet zigzag motifs, enriched with high relief bobbles.
This unique piece of wearable art headgear is exotically coloured, fun and functional. It would look great paired with blue jeans or a denim jacket. It can be worn as a warm, soft, snuggly hat, with or without the scarf-ends knotted or wrapped around the wearer’s neck, or simply slung around the wearer’s neck like a neckwarmer with long, draping ends.
Or, and here’s the coolest part… it can be turned upside-down with the scarf ends knotted together, when it transforms into a handy tote bag (pic of it as a bag shown). Out shopping and discover that you forgot your bag? The Blue Opal scart turns into a useful carrier bag in seconds.
The yarns in this scart are beautifully soft- the base yarns include (never-before-used probably 1970’s) vintage wool/mohair mix boucle and brushed wool. Similarly, the accent yarns are from my vintage yarn collection, a mix of mohair, wool and a few synthetics. I estimate that this scart is at least 75 percent natural fibres, mostly vintage Australian wool.
Variegated black and sky blue feathers yarn forms a fuzzy band around the hat’s lower crown section. The scarf ends are surrounded with the same yarn, then completed with a super soft and silky deeper blue ‘bobbly’ designer yarn edging row.
From each of the crown’s two corners, luxuriant, bright orange tassels of 15cm/6” dance from twisted cords of 4cm/1.5” in length.
The two scarf ends each measure 76cm/30” in length. Their soft, multi-coloured fringes, also highlighted with ‘flashes’ of orange, measure approximately 20cm/8”.
The Blue Opal is sized to snuggle around most craniums- up to around 59cm/23”. It contains mostly woollen yarns as well as a little mohair and some synthetics, so please treat it like any woollen garment, and handwash and rinse it gently in lukewarm water, using woolwash if possible. Then roll in a towel to gently squeeze out excess moisture, and dry flat. Do not machine wash or tumble dry.
Shipping- I use Australia Post and usually send out parcels within 24 hours, except on weekends and public holidays, when the local post office is closed. Shipping to the US/UK should take about ten days, but unfortunately shipping delays can happen sometimes. If that’s the case, customers should have a tracking number, but let me know and I’ll do my best to follow up the parcel’s progress from this end.
Tracking- I provide tracking within Australia and to countries where it is possible- most do allow for tracking, including the US, UK and Australia.
Australians- I’m presently sending all parcels within Australia via Australia Post Express post, to make sure they arrive as fast and reliably as possible, as well as providing a tracking number to the buyer.
This hat is also listed in my etsy shop at www.etsy.com/shop/cerublu If you like it, but might need a different size or colour scheme, please ask- I’m always delighted to fulfil custom orders and commissions. My contact page is here, or there’s a form below.
